2021 Trends: architecture and lighting

Architectural trends have evolved over the years and so has the relationship between architecture and lighting. Similarly, the relationship between the users of the spaces as well as the spaces themselves, or the role of lighting in this relationship, have also been changing.

The following is a brief summary of the trends that are marking and will mark the relationship between architecture and lighting in 2021.

General Trends

Although nothing is set in stone when it comes to trends, in general terms, the most recent relationship between architecture and lighting is marked by the following developments:

  • Increased environmental awareness -> environmental awareness is no longer limited to efficiency, but also includes natural and recycled materials, among others. It has to do with all that evokes naturalness and is environmentally friendly.
  • Health and comfort  -> it has been proven that lighting affects us physically, biologically and emotionally, as it has a direct impact on our circadian rhythm. Today's lighting should therefore not only be concerned with technology and aesthetics, but also with the impact it has on our well-being.
  • Flexible and multifunctional spaces -> users no longer adapt to the spaces, but it is the spaces that have to adapt to their users' activities. That is why both the architecture and the lighting must be flexible and changeable in order to adapt to users' needs at all times.
  • Combination of design and functionality  -> there is an increasing demand for more technical decorative lighting and, at the same time, for more aesthetically appealing technical lighting.

At Novolux Lighting, we work, day after day, to offer a technical and decorative lighting catalogue, for indoor and outdoor spaces, that follows these trends and covers all kinds of lighting needs and applications.

Trends in Domestic Spaces

If we go into the domestic sphere and analyse the major trends in this area, we will find the following points:

  • The growing relevance of kitchens -> kitchens are getting bigger and becoming the heart of the home. In some cases, they are even integrated into the dining / living room. In our EXO catalogue, we offer several product families that fit fantastically in this type of spaces.
  • Bathroom transformation  -> this space is becoming a place for personal relaxation, similar to a spa. In our EXO catalogue, we also offer a section of bathroom luminaires and mirrors.
  • Designs and industrial aesthetics & the typical lines of Asian minimalism  -> sober spaces with straight lines, soft lighting and no big contrasts.
  • “Home office” -> teleworking is here to stay, and from now on it will be necessary to have a work space at home with adequate lighting to do this activity properly.

Trends in Indoor Luminaires

Finally, if we focus a little more on the detail of the luminaires that will light our homes, we will reach the following conclusions regarding indoor luminaire trends for 2021:

  • Natural materials are becoming increasingly popular  -> luminaires made of wood, wicker and similar materials are becoming more frequent. Our new Twist or Compact lines are some examples, as well as our Cuska or Wood.
  • Exposed glass and lightbulbs  -> another type of luminaires that are becoming more and more prominent in indoor spaces are those with exposed lightbulbs or with an obvious prevalence of glass. Our new Oxy family is a clear example of this trend, as well as our Elga or Baguet families.
  • Copper luminaires  -> although the colours par excellence in the world of luminaires have always been white, black (even grey depending on the product and its application), now the trend is to go for copper, reddish and golden tones. Our great exponent in this category is the extension of the Tania family or our new Tosca.
